Murakami writes magical realism - my absolute favorite genre - tiny people, fish rain, talking cats, parallel universe, time travel.
Five years ago, when I first read Norwegian Wood, I have never come across the book that would be profoundly sad yet would make me hopeful about love and life. The book made me want to explore more work of the writer. I fell in love with the flow and tune of his every other work.
The characters in Murakami's stories are so ordinary that they find the way to be completely odd to experience surreal events with authentic emotions. Their personalities are not presented from the outward view but from what is going on within their mind and heart. Their interior being makes choices that seem foolish but are ultimately courageous. In most unrealistic way, his character express shame, fear, sexual desire, anger and frustration, which helps the reader accepts their emotions and embraces their flaws.
Reading Murakami is a healing journey as it allows readers to escape the reality while bringing them closer to it. Readers finds a companion with whom they can be vulnerable with.
Like in therapy, there are always some music in the background as the plot unfolds. From Beethoven, Morzart to Bob Dlyan, readers can play music and read the book.
